The Climate Prediction Center has changed the ENSO Alert System Status to an "El Niño Watch." The Mid March Plume-based ENSO Forecast in the March 20, 2014 ENSO Quick Look from the IRI & CPC indicates a 50% chance of El Nino conditions developing in the Jun-Jul-Aug season, and the probability increases to 60% by the Sep-Oct-Nov season. In a March 24th Australian Broadcasting Rural article atmospheric scientist Paul E. Roundy (University at Albany, New York) says the chance of a major event is "close to a 70 or 80 percent." He explains that the only time equatorial Pacific subsurface temperatures have warmed this much this time of year was in March at the beginning of the historic 1997-1998 El Nino event. Guess we'll see!

Since last Wednesday evening a series of Pacific storm systems has added about 3.0 to 4.5 inches snow water equivalent to the Kern Basin snowpack. The new snow increased the Southern Sierra snowpack from 20% of normal to 36% of normal. Here is a CNRFC map with snow sensor data showing the percent of normal snowpack for stations from the Kern Basin up to Yosemite.

Atmospheric river events are the wildcards of rainy season precipitation. As was the case last season, an atmospheric river has resulted in some double-digit precipitation totals in Central California. Although the core of the stream of moisture wasn't pointed at the Southern Sierra, the Kern Basin did benefit from some "spill over" to the south. It's not all from the AR event, but since January 28, Kern Basin snow sensors have recorded up to about 3 inches water equivalent of snow, giving the snowpack a much-needed boost.
