It's time for a road trip! Load up the Chevy and head to Kernville for the 36th Kern River Festival, hosted by the Kern River Alliance. There's already a lot of paddlers in town. Brush Creek is being run, the Upper is at 1200 cfs , and the Lower at Borel has been about 800- 900 cfs. It looks like all the Upper Kern runs and creeks should have good water. On the Lower Kern, Miracle to Democrat should have adequate water, and if the release to the Lower goes up just a little, the Cataracts section should also have adequate water. Lots of boating to be done!

Brilliant blue skies, warm temperatures, and a good river level were enjoyed by all. (Kayaking 101 classes usually start out a Lake Isabella, where students can become familiar with their equipment and practice strokes and other skills that will be used on the river.) The weather cooperated and everyone enjoyed paddling the boats. Sierra South had a chance to sit and chat with Woody. Here, mostly uncensored, are the highlights of the "Interview with Woody".

Baker Point (7754 ft.) is a good indicator of the snow level in the Kern River basin. We didn't see much snow on the peak earlier this season, but in a remarkable turn-around the snowpack in the Southern Sierra is now at about 100% of normal for the date.

This vigorous cold front was impressive, resulting in some heavy rain and thundershowers across the San Joaquin Valley and Southern Sierra. There was even reports of a "tornado" in downtown Los Angeles. The Kernville RAWS recorded about 0.7 inch of rain. Similar precipitation amounts were reported at Beach Meadows and the Chagoopa Plateau.

Evan's all smiles because there is water again! Don't waste it... Come try the new Perception whitewater kayaks for free! Join Team Perception and Sierra South Paddle Sports for a spin in the new Method Air, Amp, and Stikine, on March 4th & 5th from 9:00am to 4pm. Meet at the deck at Sierra South. We should have 10-15 boats to demo. Bring your own boat and gear to be able to trade out boats. The clinic will be informal and fun. We will decide the itinerary based upon experience, water flows, weather, etc. Please email us at paddle@sierrasouth.com to reserve a spot on the 1st comers list. We may have to assign different days to different people if we get too huge a response. Perception has an evolutionary new outfitting system which should take the industry by storm! Adjustable thigh braces you say? ...Come see! You may also call to be put on the 1st comers list. Of course you can still just show up and take your chances. We want everyone to see these boats!

L.A. boater Bill Britton with his brand new Nissan Xterra. Bill loves this vehicle for kayaking... sturdy built-in car rack, place for wet boating stuff, moderate price, handles well, waterproof seats, high clearance, good in snow, nice looking. Why are we promoting cars, you ask? Well, we're not really, we just had fun doing the commercial on the Kern River with local kayakers and rafters as stunt boaters! Watch the commercial carefully; that's Landon Lipke jumping off the rock launch at Chamise Gorge. The rafters flipping the boat are Barry Tessman, Tom Moore, Peter Wiechers, Katharine Haines, & Adam Nielson. The vehicle is the sport SUV of the year. Of course the stunt boaters hope the commercial runs for a long, long, time...

Pascoes Snow 1970-1998

A chart of the snowpack at Pascoes (a snow sensor in the Kern River basin) for the period 1970 to 1998. The chart shows the average December snow water equivalent (SWE), an April 1 centered SWE, and the maximum SWE for each season.

As you can see from the chart, the snowpack pattern is quite variable. During the period, the December snowpack varied from zero to over 15 inches, and the maximum seasonal snowpack from a low of 10 inches SWE to a high of nearly 70 inches SWE. While it is difficult to be optimistic of having a normal snowpack this year, there have been La Niña influenced seasons at Pascoes with below average December snowfall, but average or above average seasonal snowpacks. Note the snowpack for Dec. 79 (WY 1980) and Dec. 95 (WY 1996).

This RiverPhoto was taken at Hoover Dam, the put-in for a 3 day flat water environmental outdoor education trip arranged for 7th grade students from Westerly School, Long Beach, CA. The section of river paddled was the Black Canyon of the Colorado River. Here is another photo looking downstream from the put-in.

If your school or youth group would be interested in arranging an outdoor education class, give us a call. We can accommodate over 80 people in a multitude of programs. We do not run a survival school. We introduce the out-of-doors to students in a positive and enjoyable way, teaching them skills necessary to enjoy the natural world with confidence and wide-eyed wonderment for the rest of their lives. Most of our trips are water-based around rafting, kayaking, and canoeing. We would like to tailor a program to fit your school's needs.
