Yeaaa Rebecca! That's what all the paddlers are shouting in this photo taken at the KVRC's Miracle Hot Springs Slalom this last Sunday morning. Much of Rebecca's on-the-water training in the year leading up to the Olympics was on the new slalom course. Sunday's inaugural race was a celebration of Rebecca's dedication to the sport of kayaking, exemplary Olympic spirit, and Silver medal win.
It seemed most of the paddlers in the Miracle race were inspired by Rebecca's Olympic win. How else could you explain how playboater Paul Armes, in his first time on a slalom course, paddling a 7 ft. kayak, had one of the faster times on the course? Like the proverbial flight of the bumblebee, that doesn't seem possible!
Kernville paddler and photographer Dan Ocampo had the fastest single run time on the Miracle course, and claims to have only worked out with Rebecca "a couple of times." Kayak polo player Rob Logan won the Expert Men's class, and Keith Kishiyama increased his Sierra Cup Slalom Series lead with another win in Men's Masters class. Forest Service River Ranger, Brian Cosgrove, showed his versatility, paddling in both canoe and kayak classes.
Perhaps the most impressive were the Junior and Cadet racers, who seemed to relish the most difficult moves on the challenging course. Jessica Subido won the Women's Expert class and Alex Blum placed in Men's Expert. Nick Wilkening made all the gates on both runs and won the Boy's Cadet class. Sara Perales edged Sophia Blum to win the Girl's Cadet class. All the results and some photos are now available on the KVRC web site.
In the final whitewater events of the Athen's Olympics, twins Pavol and Peter Hochschorner of Slovakia continued their domination of C2, winning the Gold. In a tough Semifinal run where only six C2's would advance to the final, Americans Joe Jacobi and Matt Taylor placed 8th. In Men's K1 Benoit Peschier and Fabien Lefevre of France won the Gold and Bronze, with Great Britain's Campbell Walsh taking the Silver. USA`s Scott Parsons paddled well, and placed 6th in K1. Kernville`s Rebecca Giddens won the Silver medal in Women`s K1. We applaud Rebecca, Joe & Matt, Scotty, Brett and all the Team U.S.A. athletes!

A mild to moderate El Nino may be in the works. In the August 5, 2004 update of his Multivariate ENSO Index (MEI) page Dr. Klaus Wolter reported a 0.2 increase in the MEI since last month, and more than 0.5 increase in the last four months. According to Dr. Wolter, "An increase into the upper tercile rankings at this time of year compared to the preceding spring has ALWAYS resulted in at least weak to moderate El Niño conditions during the subsequent fall and winter." The Climate Prediction Center's ENSO Diagnostic Discussion, issued August 5, also says that El Niño conditions are expected to develop during the next 3 months.

In an Olympics where empty seats appear to out number spectators, even for headline sports such as Gymnastics, another big crowd packed the Helliniko Olympic Complex for the Men's Whitewater K1 and C2 qualifying heats. U.S. paddlers Joe Jacobi & Matt Taylor (C2), Brett Heyl (K1), and Scott Parsons (K1) all qualified for Friday's Semifinals.
Joe & Matt's excellent 2nd heat run was just a few seconds off the pace of Gold medal favorites, Pavol & Peter Hochschorner of Slovakia, qualifying them in 6th place. Kayaker Brett Heyl had two very good runs and qualified in 5th position. Scott Parsons qualified 14th. See U.S. Will Be Well Represented in Whitewater Slalom Semifinals (USACK) for more info. Go Joe & Matt, Brett, Scotty, and all the Team U.S.A. athletes!

However, the Second World War quickly intervened and retarded the sport’s growth until 1949. Postwar development falls naturally into three distinct periods. More: USACK Olympic Slalom Team Media Guide (PDF) o World Cup slalom is based mainly in Europe, where it is very popular. Last year's worlds, held in Augsburg, drew about 52,000 over a long weekend and was widely televised. The top European paddlers, such as Schmidt, two-time Olympic gold medalist Stepanka Hilgertova of the Czech Republic and two-time world champion Fabien Lefevre of France, can draw upon deeply funded resources for coaching, equipment and travel expenses.
