Merry Christmas from all of us at Sierra South! Thank you so much for your patronage and friendship during the past year. This business is so much more than selling boats. Sharing our passion for paddling and the out-of-doors with friends and customers such as you is a priceless asset. Enjoy yourselves over the holidays and visit us soon.

As a thank you and a chance to get out of Dodge over the holidays, we will be offering free kayak demos from Dec 26th-31st. We have just received new demos! Come try-out new boats such as Riot's Trickster & Prankster, & Boogie; Wavesport's EZ, Big EZ, Evo, & Score; and Pyranha's Pro 230, 235, H2 245, & H2 255. There is not enough water to make a run on the Upper, but you can play below Ewings or perhaps scrape down the Lower. Hope to see you. Pray for snow!

When thinking of "average snowfall" there's a tendency to expect a nice consistent snowpack from year to year. In the Sierra it is anything but. Over the past 30 years, the average snowpack at Upper Tyndall Creek has been about 28.5 inches liquid equivalent, but this is comprised of years as low as 3.5 inches (1976-76) and as high as 65 inches (1982-83). For more information see Early Season Snowpack and Seasonal Snowpack in the Upper Kern River Basin, 1970-1999.

River Notes for Tuesday, December 19, 2000

Important information about River Notes.

California Cooperative Snow Surveys reports the snowpack is currently about 32% normal in the southern section of the Sierra. This section includes the San Joaquin and Mono drainages, and the drainages south through the Kern. This is about one to two inches of water equivalent more than last year at this time.

The current outlook is for dry weather through New Year's. The precipitation outlook for January 2001, issued 12/14/00, specifies "climatological norms" for the Southern Sierra.

As we saw last year, snowfall in the Sierra can be very capricious. It was very dry in December and very wet in February.

River Notes for Wednesday, December 13, 2000

Important information about River Notes.

The latest computer models suggest tonight's storm will move through further to the north than forecast yesterday, with far less snow expected in the Kern River basin.

The HPC QPF forecast, issued this afternoon for the 24 hour period ending Thursday afternoon, shows paltry amounts of 0.1 inch liquid equivalent, or less, in the Southern Sierra. A jet on the back side of the trough may dig a little further south than currently expected, so maybe the higher areas of the Kern River basin will get a little more than that. We'll see!.

River Notes for Tuesday, December 12, 2000

Important information about River Notes.

Short term computer models, ensemble forecasts, and real-life weather forecasters suggest the Central and Southern Sierra should see its first significant snowfall in several weeks Wednesday afternoon into Thursday.

The HPC QPF forecast, issued this morning for the 24 hour period ending Thursday afternoon, shows amounts in excess of 1.0 inch liquid equivalent in topographically favored areas of the Sierra. We'll see!

River Notes for Monday, December 4, 2000

Important information about River Notes.

Just don't know what holiday gift to get the paddler in your family? You can't go wrong with a Sierra South Gift Certificate.

Last week there was much uncertainty in the computer models regarding the development of a trough or low along the west coast. A "Spaghetti" plot of ensemble forecast members for yesterday's 500mb heights showed a number of possible solutions and with some of these solutions, there would have been a chance of rain in the first half of this week.

Today's IR satellite photo shows that a cut-off low has formed well off shore and HPC and ensemble forecasts suggest there will be no precipitation in Southern California until (perhaps) Wednesday or Thursday.

Current ensemble forecasts suggest unsettled and possibly wetter weather over the northern two-thirds of the state for the 6-10 day and "Week 2" periods.
