River Notes for Sunday, January 28, 2001

Important information about River Notes.

January storms have brought much needed snow to the Sierra, more than doubling the snowpack. For example at Pascoes, snow water content has increased from about 3.0 inches on January 1 to about 7.7 inches today. This is about 2.5 inches more than last year, but still below average for the date.

A weak shortwave and associated front could bring a few flurries to the higher elevations of the Southern Sierra tomorrow, but at the moment, the remainder of the week looks dry. Come on snow!

Just in... the hot new Super Ego and CFS from Dagger and the Inazone 242 ans Inazone 212 from Pyranha. Check 'em out in the New Boat Barn or call 1-800-376-7303 for more info.

It's cold, and a upper low over Nevada is resulting in some fairly widespread snow showers in the Tehachapis, eastern deserts, east slopes of the Sierra, the San Gabriel Mountains and other nearby areas. The upper low is expected to be around through Wednesday, with cold temps and a chance of a shower, snow shower or even a thunderstorm continues, with the emphasis on the more eastern areas.

River Notes for Tuesday, January 9, 2001

Important information about River Notes.

Access to snow data is down this morning, but it looks like in general the Southern Sierra received about 0.25 inch SWE yesterday. If today's forecasts verify, there will be much more than that on Wednesday and Thursday.

The latest (12z) AVN and ETA forecasts suggest a major rain and snow event for Southern California. The current HPC QPF forecast shows 1.0 to over 2.0 inches of precipitation in the Sierra for the 24 hour period ending Thursday morning, with more snow following on Thursday. We'll see!

River Notes for Monday, January 8, 2001

Important information about River Notes.

Last week various weather resources suggested a change to a wetter pattern this week, and this has occurred. Just how much this will benefit the Kern snowpack is difficult to predict at this point.

Today's system has resulted in some snow and rain in the Southern Sierra. As of early afternoon the Kernville RAWS has recorded 0.08 inch of rain, the Johnsondale RAWS 0.31 inch of rain, Upper Tyndall Creek about 0.2 inch SWE of snow.

The next system appears to have a good source of tropical moisture and is potentially very wet. The !2z AVN from COLA/IGES shows widespread precipitation over Southern California during the 12 hours ending Thursday morning, but the current HPC QPF forecast depicts much higher precipitation amounts along the coast. This is due in part to the track the system is expected to take and poor orographic enhancement in the Sierra. We'll see!

With the December snowpack below normal and a possible storm on the horizon, you might wonder about seasons with "Great Kern Basin Snow Comebacks." Last year wasn't bad. On Dec 31,1999, we had 0.3 inch snow water equivalent (SWE) at Upper Tyndall Creek (UTY) and the 1999-2000 seasonal maximum recorded at that station was 22.7 inches SWE. On December 31, 1994 there was 3.8 inches SWE at UTY, and the max for the 94-95 season was 38.1 inches SWE. But what about 1979? That season there was 4.0 inches SWE on December 31 at UTY, and the 1979-80 season max was 44.0 inches!

River Notes for Tuesday, January 2, 2001

Important information about River Notes.

Happy New Year from the staff at Sierra South!

It's been a while since we have had significant snow in the Sierra, but if today's medium range computer models verify, a change from the dry pattern is about a week away. It's far from a sure thing at this point, but a number of computer models and the ensemble forecasts support the idea of a strong trough moving through the state around the 8th, with additional impulses following on a strong northwesterly flow.

Current ensemble forecasts of precipitation probability suggest that most of California could get a good shot of precipitation. CDC's Week 2 Precipitation Probability shows a continuing above average change of precipitation for California for the seven day period centered on January 13.
