River Notes for Tuesday, July 25, 2000

Important information about River Notes.

We've been paddling the new Dagger Outlaw and Necky Zip, and are really excited about these boats. Both boats have super loose hulls and are great fun to paddle and play.

The Dagger Outlaw is the closest flat-bottomed replacement for the venerable RPM we have seen from Dagger yet. Of course, we demand more out of an all- around boat now than we did 5 or 6 years ago. All-around now means it plays really well on eddylines, flat-spins, cartwheels, is fun to paddle in low water, and can still handle big and hard water as my RPM did. A big bill to fit for sure. The Outlaw is certainly getting closer! Tom at 6'3" with a 37" inseam and size 12 shoes was able to adjust it to fit comfortable. The tail feels much like the RPM tail. The bow is short feeling, nice rocker for surfing yet easy to initiate for bow moves. Foot bumps and thigh braces give best universal fit feel out of the box since the RPM. Derrick Tito, long- time SSI instructor has been paddling the Mr. Clean for the past 1.5 years and loves the Outlaw. "It gives me the ability to run bigger water than my Mr. Clean," said Derrick, "yet still be able to play." For smaller boaters, we will review the little sidekick version called the Showdown soon. Here is a side-by-side shot of the Showdown (left) and Outlaw. (Dagger Outlaw 7'10" x 24 7/8" 60 gal 40 lbs. Wt. 145-220lbs $959.)

The first thing you notice about the Necky Zip is the width. 26.5" is by far the widest playboat out there. This boat truly spins easier than any other boat. Classic Necky lines still provide quick speed. Stability is phenomenal. Taper on the sidewall should give great carving ability at the ocean. Rolling is a bit harder, but an easy adjustment. Symmetrical balance makes cartwheels effortless. We think this boat will be ideal for the 170-210lb paddler. You need to try it to appreciate it. (Necky Zip 7'10" x 26.5" 53gal 40lbs Wt.140-210lbs $895.)

Paddlers liked the Outlaw so much we've already sold out our first shipment, but have more on the way. We currently have two Showdowns in stock, and 2 Zips. To check on stock, arrange a demo, or ask a question, call us at 1-800-376-7303.

River Notes for Tuesday, July 18, 2000

Important information about River Notes.

With about 1500 cfs being released to the Lower Kern at Borel, virtually all sections of the Kern River from Lake Isabella to Lake Ming have good water levels. There's good whitewater for most skill levels, ranging from class II on the Golf Club stretch on Rancheria, to class V+/VI on the Kern Below Democrat. ( A PFD should be worn on ALL sections of the river, and proper equipment and skills are required.)
