There is a Private Boaters Meeting with the Forest Service Saturday, July 28, 7:00 PM at Kernville Chamber of Commerce. Topics to be discussed include:
The release to the Lower Kern at Borel was at about 800 cfs most of Saturday and then decreased Saturday afternoon to about 690 cfs. Today it's back up to about 840 cfs. There appears to be a temporary problem with the Corp of Engineer web site that provides Kern River flow data, but Lake Isabella hourly outflow data is still available from the CDEC web site.

El Nino returns?... Rumors are just beginning to spread about the return of El Nino for the winter of '01-'02. If this Summer's monsoons are a precursor, then we may be in for a big water year in '02. Flows on the Upper Kern peaked last Friday at over 1000 cfs. "I have never seen the Upper come back to over 600 cfs once the river dropped below 250 cfs in nearly 20 years on the Kern," said Sierra South co-owner Tom Moore.
Since July 4, the remote sensor at Crabtree Meadow (10,700 ft.) in the High Sierra recorded 1.74 inches of rain. Many opportunistic paddlers (webmaster included) got 4 days of good Forks paddling in during the higher flows... "It is great to be able to check the flow out on an hourly basis," said Sierra South kayak instructor Rob Puryear. "Seeing the flow stay up consistently during the summer storm let us know it wasn't just a couple of hours of spiked flows." The river today is still above 500 cfs which is great for running Inflatable kayaks and hard shells on the Class II-III Lickety Split section.
