River Notes for Thursday, September 21, 2000

Important information about River Notes.

U.S. whitewater slalom kayaker Scott Shipley qualified 5th and then finished 5th in the Men's Kayak Singles medals round Wednesday. Shipley would have had to have a near perfect run to beat Gold medal winner Thomas Schmidt from Germany, but a touch on run 1 and "getting stuck at 15" on run 2 cost him a Silver or Bronze. See "Shipley improves but still no medal " and "Picture Show: Gold at Penrith".

Rebecca Bennet-Giddens placed 7th in the Women's Singles Kayak on Monday; a solid performance for the young U.S. paddler. She did awesome this year in International competition and is just going to get faster!

A difficult artificial course with sticky holes, big waves and surging, pushy water were not the only challenges that paddlers had to face at the Penrith Whitewater Stadium. Gusty winds blew gate poles all over the place, requiring paddlers to take conservative lines and to try to make instantaneous adjustments on a course where line is critical. Rules require that paddlers go through the gate poles, however windblown they may be. Olympian and National Champion C1-er Davey Hearn talks about the wind and how it affected his runs in this NPR All Things Considered audio segment. Also check out the video of Davey paddling the Kern at the 2000 Nationals earlier this summer!

U.S. C2 paddlers Matt Taylor and Lecky Haller missed a gate in a qualifying run, accruing a 50 second penalty that ruined their chances for making it into the medal round.

With the completion of the Whitewater events, Canoe/Kayak takes a break until Tuesday, September 26 at 8:30 a.m. (Sydney time) when the Flatwater events start with the Men's 1000m prelims. Check NBC's TV schedules for days that will have Canoe/Kayak coverage.

Important information about River Notes.

U.S. whitewater slalom kayaker Scott Shipley qualified 5th in the Men's Kayak Singles Qualifying yesterday, just 1.8 seconds behind the top time of Switzerland's Mathias Roethenmund. The difference was a single gate touch on Shipley's first run. See "Shipley advances easily to the finals ". The K1 finals are scheduled for 1:30 PM today (Sydney time). Today's taped TV coverage of Canoe/Kayak is scheduled on NBC at 12:41-2:11 a.m. and MSNBC at 10 a.m.-5 p.m. (ET/PT).

Check out the video of Olympian and National Champion Davey Hearn paddling the Kern at the 2000 Nationals. The 41 year old paddler qualified for the finals in the Whitewater Canoe Singles, but was about 10-12 seconds behind the medal winners in the finals. (To put this in perspective, that's about 0.5 second per gate.)
