State of the Snowpack – 90% of April 1st

The winter of 2024–2025 has delivered yet another nearly perfect snowpack, setting the stage for an epic Kern River rafting season this spring, summer, and fall. For the first time since 1998, the Kern has experienced three back-to-back years of 90% or better snowpack. So, what does that mean for the 2025 season? Ideal rafting conditions across the Upper, Lower, and Forks of the Kern. The beauty of a full snowpack is that it offers something for everyone—from exciting first-time trips to adrenaline-pumping Class V adventures and everything in between.

Kern River Flow Outlook

Thanks to an almost perfect snowpack, we’re expecting steady runoff on the Upper Kern from April through mid-July. High water protocol (HWP) could be in effect from mid-May to mid-June on the Upper Kern, depending on how hot the temperatures are in the spring. On the Lower Kern, flows are projected to stay in the 2,000–3,000 cfs range for most of the summer. Since HWP kicks in at 3,000 cfs on the Lower Kern, we don’t expect an extended high water period—but it could come into play during parts of June and July.

High Water Protocol

During high water years, Sierra South implements a High Water Protocol to ensure every trip runs as safely and smoothly as possible. Rafting the Kern River at high flows offers some of the most thrilling whitewater experiences out there, but it also calls for added safety measures. When High Water Protocol is in effect, minimum age requirements increase, swim tests are mandatory for Class IV and V trips, and wetsuits are required on the Upper Kern. If you have any questions about high water conditions or what to expect, our river experts are here to help.

Book In Advance

With an incredible season ahead and demand already running high, booking your trip in advance is highly recommended. While we’ll offer walk-in reservations, they’ll be available on a first come, first-served basis. Most of our trips have a maximum capacity of 30–35 rafters, so securing your spot early is the best way to guarantee your adventure.
